The Ulvö Islands

On the islands of Norra and Södra Ulvön there is a sheet of dark diabase. The diabase was formed by magma and primarily consists of the minerals plagioclase, olivine and pyroxene. In the diabase on the Ulvö Islands there are also layers with varying iron titanium oxide content. These are visible as darker layers that have thicknesses from centimetres to metres.

Mining has been carried out in some of the layers where iron-titanium oxides have formed, and began as long ago as the 1600s. The purpose was to extract iron, but the economic value of the mineralisation now consists of their titanium content. Mining has been carried out in a number of places. The most obvious mining remnants are on Norra Ulvön, at Gruvmyran, and on Södra Ulvön at Marviksgrunnan and by “nya gruvan", the new mine.
