Bergvattsberget

Bergvattsbergetis a flyggberg, which means that there is a steep drop — flygg — in the lee of the dominant direction of ice movement. Its form is similar to that of a sheep-back rock and it was created in a similar fashion. The inland ice sheet has polished the whole mountain into the shape of a sheep-back rock. Bergvattsberget is composed of Revsund granite. The combination of the mountain´s steep sides and the properties of the rock make it particularly vulnerable to weathering.

The mountain is a fantastic example of how heat, cold and water interact in the process of decomposing a large mountain. From a human perspective the process may seem slow, but from a geological perspective the weathering process at Bergvattsberget is relatively rapid. In the spring, when the sun heats the southern, steeply sloping mountainside, the snow and ice melt. The melt water finds its way into small cracks in the rock. In the night the rock cools down and the water freezes and turns to ice. Because water expands when it freezes this creates tensions in the rock. After repeated freezing and thawing large areas of rock can loosen and crash to the ground. In this way, at the bottom of the slope, large amounts of rock have massed into an impressive and inaccessible scree slope.
The weathering of the rocks continues here as well, turning boulders to smaller rocks and stones. The process of frost shattering is one example of mechanical weathering länk till annan webbplats. The scree slope at Bergvattsberget is an example of talus formation.   A particularly large rockfall took place 20 years ago. It made the ground begin to shake and a rocking chair about 2.5km from the mountain started rocking. There are rockfalls almost every year.Perhaps there´ll be one when you are there!
